Since its formation in 1996, the Dukes County Health Council has been identifying service gaps in the areas of health and wellness. Our findings have led to the creation of valuable local institutions.
Island Health Care

Island Health Care is a federally qualified community health center ensuring all islanders and visitors, regardless of income or insurance status, have access to high-quality health care.  It is staffed by nurse practitioners, nurses, psychiatrists, and collaborating physicians.

Vineyard Health Care Access Program

Vineyard Health Care Access helps people of all ages acquire health insurance coverage through government programs. Confidential services are provided by experienced, knowledgeable and caring professionals at no charge as a community service of Dukes County and the towns of Martha's Vineyard.

Youth Task Force

The Youth Task Force mission is to reduce substance use and other risky behaviors by promoting community-wide health and wellness for youth and families through a cooperative integrated network of youth, parents, health practitioners, health and social service organizations, public officials, educators, law enforcement officers, and other community members.  Its vision is a mobilized Martha’s Vineyard community with a culture that values substance abuse prevention.

FirstStop MV is an Island-wide initiative to support the health and wellness of our community by connecting people to information and critical resources. Rural Health Scholars

The Rural Scholars is a select group of students from the University of Massachusetts Graduate School of Nursing and Medicine.  Sponsored by the Health Council and housed by the Martha's Vineyard Hospital, the students spend time on the Vineyard researching and analyzing health related topics of critical importance to our island.  Their data-supported reports assist the Council in proceeding with its mission.
